Kirkwell Cattle Company is committed to the cowboy way of life. We would like to introduce it to those that still love the adventure and excitement of the Old West.
We do not offer "trail rides" or "cattle drives" or any of the standard types of fare offered by the typical dude ranch. We are a working ranch with thousands of cattle to manage and a herd of horses to care for. Our riding area covers a large section of Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
The closest "large" city to our ranch is Springfield, Colorado, population 2000. It is 50 miles away. Pritchett is closer (20 miles) with a population of 200. Our ranch adjoins the Comanche National Grassland. The area available for riding covers several hundred square miles of prairie, grassland, mesas and canyons!
And we have been known to trailer some horses into the San Juan Mountains that stretch 100 miles in any direction. Yes, even the expert rider can easily get lost! (But your horse will know the way back to camp.)
We offer custom adventures for any level of skill, from novice to expert. We will be happy to help you design your own adventure. Some of the things we have done are:
- Traveling cross-country by horse or wagon through the Black Mesa area (highest peak in Oklahoma).
- Moving cattle in the Spring and Fall to different sections of the Kirkwell Cattle Company grazing lands.
- Spring heifer roundup and drive to the branding pens for branding and other "stuff."
- Traveling by horseback or wagon to Carrizo Canyon, Picture Canyon, Sante Fe Historical Trail, and early Indian and settler ruins
- For the expert rider, cross-country riding through Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
- Camping at 9000 feet, and exploring the San Juan Mountains on horseback.
